Ghewa Sumpa Kyap

Ghewa Sumpa Kyap was a painter during the 16th century who painted the murals of Vairocana Buddha and Amoghasiddhi Buddha on the south wall of the central hall at Phyang Monastery in Ladakh. Exquisitely painted in rich colors, the Buddhas were beautifully adorned with robes and crowns, giving a dignified impression and exhibiting the mastery and skill of the artist.
Starting in the 16th century, the names and birth places of mural artists in Ladakh were added to the inscriptions. Ghewa Sumpa Kyap was among these Buddhist artists, who were representative of locally nurtured talent.
