Fawang Temple Pagoda

Fawang Temple Pagoda

CHINA, Henan, Zhengzhou

The pagoda stands at the southern foot of Taishi Mountain and is around 210 m south of Fawang Temple. There is no inscription that records the construction of the pagoda; however, judging from its style, it was probably built during the High Tang period (712–756). Surrounding the pagoda there are five other brick pagodas constructed between the Tang (618–907) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. This pagoda was listed as a National Cultural Heritage Site in 2001.
The 15-tier, square, brick pagoda is 35 m high, with each side measuring 7 m. The eaves consist of corbeling on each level. From the seventh level upwards the eaves grow rapidly smaller, creating a tapered curved shape. An arched doorway on the first tier leads to a chamber. All other levels have an arched opening on every side. The spire has been damaged, but other parts of the pagoda are in good condition.
