Sahri Bahlol: Lay Devotee

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar

Although there are similarities of presentation to Gandharan statues of monks, this figure has an undergarment covering the right shoulder and wears a tasseled skull cap and small earrings. It is a reasonable assumption therefore, that the figure could represent a lay devotee or a benefactor.
The elderly man is depicted with crease lines on the forehead and a mustache confined to the corners of the mouth. He holds an alms bowl decorated with floral patterns in his carefully delineated left hand. The contours of the body are visible through the folds of the garment, especially the legs and knees.
