The Third Patriarch of the Tibetan Sakya school, Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen, was born to Sachen Kunga Nyingpo in 1147. The sculpture depicts him with the shaven head of a monk. The upturned eyes, indicating concentration, are longer than the brows, while the wrinkles on the forehead and at the corners of the eyes show his age. The monastic robe is vividly sculpted with dense folds along the arms and bunches naturally around the legs. The hands relax on the knees as the figure sits cross-legged on a chair with designs of dragon heads characteristic of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
