Chen Yu-Feng

TAIWAN, Tainan

Chen Yu-Feng, whose original name was Chen Yan, was a folk artist who specialized in painting. During his teenage years, he studied under Lu Bisong, an artist from Shantou, Guangdong in China. Subsequently he traveled to Shantou to learn traditional techniques of Chinese painting from He Jinlong.
Chen was adept in painting figures in ink with smooth and free strokes, producing handsome, gentle shapes and round faces, which appear natural and lively. His Buddhist works include paintings of the Medicine Buddha, Three Buddhas, and Arhat, as well as depictions of the Water and Land Dharma Service, all of which are kept at Chaotian Temple in Beigang, Yunlin.
