Weng Wenwei, also known as Wan-Hsiang Tsao-Tang, is a painter whose skills lie in depicting figures and landscapes, as well as creating ruled-line architectural paintings. His compositions are stable and filled with depth. Weng’s works portray imagery that is skillfully painted onto delicate rice paper, using powerful strokes that flow without dispersing.
Weng moved to Taiwan in 1948 and worked as the art director at Central Motion Pictures Corporation for 12 years. In 1967, he was awarded the Artistic Design Award at the 3rd Annual Golden Horse Film Festival with the movie “Orchids My Love.” He later worked for the China Television Company, retiring after 20 years to concentrate solely on painting. Additionally, he has been the honorary president and curator of several arts associations and museums in both Taiwan and China, as well as the recipient of numerous international arts awards. The famous artists Pu Ru and Chang Dai-Chien praised his artistic skills.
In 2003, he organized an exhibition on fine brushwork painting at the National Museum of History in Taipei, Taiwan. Subsequently, he has been invited to various countries across Asia to hold his solo exhibitions. He is the author of over 20 books including Collection of Weng Wen-Wei’s Buddhist Paintings and Contemporary Outstanding Painter of Fine Brushwork: Collection of Weng Wen-Wei’s Paintings. His Buddhist works include Amitabha Buddha, Bodhidharma, and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
