Xu Hou

CHINA, Sichuan, Ziyang; Former Shu Kingdom

Born in Jianyang, Ziyang, Xu Hou was a sculptor who, according to Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou, sculpted the Tejaprabha Buddha, Nine Luminaries, and Twenty-Eight Mansions at Daci Temple in Sichuan. He is also known to have created the standing Sakyamuni Buddha in Avatamsaka Pavilion, with the assistance of Yang Yuanzhen who decoratively painted the details of the hair, beard, and garment folds.
