Zhang Tiju

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

Tiju refers to an official’s title in the civil service. The real name of Zhang Tiju, a sculptor during the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), is unknown. He learned sculpture from the Grand Secretary Liu Yuan. According to Records of Paintings and Sculptures of the Yuan Dynasty, a decree was issued in 1320 for Zhang and the painter Shang to lead a team that would sculpt a statue of Mahakala surrounded by attendants and paint ten images of Dharma Protectors in the southwest tower of Xinghelu Temple. From this it is inferred that Zhang was a skilled sculptor of Tibetan Buddhist images.
