There is uncertainty as to Li’s real name, so art historians have called him “Tongzhi,” which is the title of the official imperial position that he held. He was a sculptor who, according to Records of Paintings and Sculptures of the Yuan Dynasty, in 1329, was commissioned by the Empress to produce nine white gold Buddha statues. Li is also known for the stone and paraffin wax sculpture of Baogong Bodhisattva he made for Chancellor Minglidonga. This sculpture, featuring a body gilded with bright, vivid colors, is considered to be Li’s masterpiece.
