Seated Bodhisattva

Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The Bodhisattva sits in the relaxation posture with the pendent foot supported on a lotus that grows from below. One hand rests on the knee and the other holds the stole. The braided hair on the tilted head is arranged into a high topknot, from which a few braids scatter over the shoulders. Apart from the necklaces, an extremely long beaded ornament hangs below the throne then loops to either side of the figure’s back. A stole worn across the left shoulder is draped diagonally across the chest like a sacred thread. The style of figure is commonly seen during the High Tang period (712–756) as one of the attendant Bodhisattvas in a Buddha Triad.
