Yang Yuanzhen

CHINA, Sichuan, Jingtang; Former Shu Kingdom

Yang Yuanzhen was a painter from Shichengshan of Jinshui (present day Jingtang, Sichuan) who specialized in painting Buddhist imagery and doing statue makeup decoration. According to Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou, he painted the well-known sculptures and statues in various temples around Chengdu, including Daci Temple and Shengxin Temple, bringing the figures to life with fine makeup and decorations, resulting in vivid skin tones, hair, beards, and clothes. Yang is also known to have painted the mural of Manjusri Bodhisattva in the Tianwang Yuan Temple in Sichuan.
