Wang Liujiu

CHINA; Song dynasty

Wang Liujiu was a highly skilled sculptor of Buddhist and Daoist images. Preferring the use of ivory, Qingtian stone, Chu stone, seashells, and other materials in his works, he was able to demonstrate the unique characteristics of each.
According to records, Wang created a seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in which all features of the image, including the surrounding landscape, trees, and rocks, as well as the Bodhisattva’s attire and accessories were carved entirely from seashell. His sculpting skills were considered highly intricate. Also included in his collection of works includes images of Maitreya Bodhisattva, Arhats, Heavenly Kings, Lu Dongbin, all of which are delicate and lively. Wang’s artworks have been copied by younger generations of sculptors, but they have struggled to master the true essence of his distinct style.
