Jie Duan was a sculptor from Fuxian county in Yan’an who specialized in creating stone Buddhist statues. According to an inscription at the Wanfo Temple Grottoes in Shaanxi, Jie and three other sculptors sculpted a total of 600 Arhat statues in 1095. In the following year, they created two Bodhisattva statues which were vivid, portraying local characteristics. He also made the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara in Shikong Temple Grotto in Shaanxi.
As indicated by inscriptions found at several local temples, the Jie family and their disciples, led by Jie Duan, were renowned sculptors of the northern Shaanxi grottoes.
