Lady Yan

CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Northern Song dynasty

A Buddhist wood sculptor, Lady Yan was the younger sister of monk Yunneng. She created sophisticated works of art including the sculpture of Lianshan, which featured pearl bouquets and 500 carved Arhats in a layered composition. The sculpture was presented to Emperor Zhenzong (reigned 997–1022) of the Song dynasty, who granted her the title Lady Ji Qiao. She was recorded in the Addendum to Famous Paintings of the Five Dynasties.
