Mengxiu

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Mengxiu was a monk and painter from Jiangnan (present day Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces). He was a master of landscape painting, and was particularly skilled in depicting scenes of fog and cloud, as well as trees and rocks. Also adept in painting bamboo, his images exhibit a loose and relaxed elegance which was rendered with an emphasis on delicate light and shadow.
In addition to being highly commended by the renowned artist Mi Fu for his outstanding skills, Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings recorded his paintings, Two Birds on Snowy Bamboo, Bamboo in the Wind, Bamboo Shoots, and Bamboo Grove.
