White-character square seal
Born in Shexian county of Huangshan, Huang Lu was also known as Cihuang or Fengliu Shanren. The son of Huang Baishan, he was a seal engraver, calligrapher, and painter. Learning the art form at a young age, his skills in seal engraving were immense. Additionally, Huang excelled in painting delicate landscapes, flowers, birds, and animals.
Huang’s depictions of mountains and forests are simple and realistic, imparting the influence of the great painting masters of the Xin’an school he studied under. Each of his paintings are stamped with the personal seals he carved for himself. In calligraphy, Huang was recognized and praised for his abilities in Han-style clerical script and Jin-style cursive script.
His Buddhist seals include The Mind is Like Sumeru, Cultivate the Body with Good Deeds, and With a Non-Discriminating Mind, Chan is Everywhere.
