Fujiwara no Nobufusa

JAPAN; Kamakura to Nanbokucho period (1185–1392)

Fujiwara no Nobufusa was a court official and calligrapher. He was originally named Michitoshi and was also known as Madenokoji. A talented official, he served several emperors during his time. He earned the trust of Emperor Go-Daigo (reigned 1318–1339) of the Kamakura period and assisted in governing the country. Together with court officials Yoshida Sadafusa and Kitabatake Chikafusa, he was referred to as one of the Three Learned Ones. After several years and great success working in the courts, he decided to devote himself entirely to Buddhism and renounced as a monk.
He was skilled in calligraphy and aspired to revive the art of copying old manuscripts. His calligraphic piece, Lotus Sutra - Chapter on Dharani, is kept at Tenkyuin Temple, and is listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. His diary was published after his death.
