Standing Buddha

Standing Buddha

CHINA; Liao dynasty

The Buddha’s appearance is in the classic style of the Liao dynasty (907–1125), with its emphasis on the refined features of the northern nationalities. Additionally, the figure displays such Buddha characteristics as an urna in mid-forehead, exaggerated earlobes, and three lines on the neck. The slim figure wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders and is opened at the front. Its raised folds fall vertically and contrast with the more simplified treatment of the tucked skirt. The hands are in a mudra. The figure stands on a double petaled lotus pedestal that rests on a circular base.
