Henmyoin Temple: Portable Shrine with Manjusri Bodhisattva

JAPAN, Wakayama, Ito; Kamakura period

The shrine is comprised of a central panel, with two side panels that are connected by hinges and fold inwards for easy portability. It was listed as an Important Cultural Property in 1908.
The central panel consists of an ovoid niche with a relief of Manjusri Bodhisattva seated in royal ease on a lotus throne atop a lion. A figure standing on rocks appears in the upper and lower registers of both side panels. Tripitaka Master Buddhapali is featured standing in the upper register of the right panel, whereas Sudhana gazes at the Bodhisattva with joined palms just below. The left panel portrays Saisho Rojin in the upper register, and King Udayana below. These figures are regarded as the kins of Manjusri Bodhisattva.
