Khru Khongpae

THAILAND, Bangkok; Bangkok period

Khru Khongpae was an artist active during the rule of King Rama III (reigned 1824–1851). During this time, traditional mural painting flourished, however, there were few well-known artists. Among them, Khru Khongpae is known for his murals at the Bangkok temples, Wat Suwannaram and Wat Bang Yikhan.
One of his representative paintings is the mural of Maha Ummagga Jataka in the ordination hall of Wat Bang Yikhan. This mural depicts Mahosadha leading an army to defend against enemy invaders. Several figures are shown scattered among the various buildings and forests. Details on the building are precisely depicted, and the overall style is realistic, resulting in a lively and compelling composition.
