Jabung Temple

Jabung Temple

INDONESIA, East Java, Probolinggo

The original name of this temple was Vajrajinaparimitapura (Perfection of the Vajra Victor). It was built in memory of a member of the royal family in 1354 during the Majapahit Empire (circa 13th–16th century).
The temple consists of a main shrine as well as one ancillary shrine, although four were originally built. The main shrine faces west and is made of red brick. The base and body of the shrine reach a height of 16.4 m; the roof was likely in the form of a brick stupa, but is missing. The base is rectangular with multiple corners and measures 9.6 m from south to north, and 13.1 m from east to west. It consists of two tiers of Sumeru thrones, with the lower tier much higher than the upper one. The walls are decorated with reliefs. On the west side is a steep flight of steps. The body is cylindrical with a doorway on the west side. The recesses on its other three walls resemble false doorways. Above these doorways is a large relief of kirtimukha. The roof was probably in the form of a brick stupa. A pedestal is inside the shrine, but the statue it held is missing.
