Seated Buddha

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The Buddha has wavy hair with large spirals in the center. The hooded eyes beneath long eyebrows are leaf-shaped and the mouth is downturned. The bulky figure’s neck is short but the three lines that signify a great person are visible. The Buddha is seated in half lotus position on a cloth-covered dais where the folds are depicted in great detail. Equal attention is given to the folds of the monastic robe, especially to the way they ripple regularly over the Buddha’s arms and legs and whorl at the knees.
