Buddha Triad

CHINA; Northern Wei dynasty

Two smaller Bodhisattvas accompany the Buddha on either side. The whole composition is encased in a plain petal-shaped mandorla that is broken at the tip. The heads of all three figures are surrounded by a nimbus, with two layers of petals clearly depicted in that of the Buddha. The Buddha makes the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras and is clad in a loose monastic robe with vividly shaped details. The Bodhisattvas are similarly clothed and wear crowns with swaying ribbons while standing on lotus pedestals that are supported by warriors.
