Ryokoin Temple: Vajra Bell

JAPAN, Wakayama, Ito

This bronze Vajrayana Buddhist Dharma instrument was created between the 16th and 17th centuries. The handle and bell were cast separately before being assembled. The handle is in the form of a seven-prong half vajra, surmounted by a jewel. There are discernible images of Buddha faces on the handle, and a ring of lotus petals decorates its shoulder. The bell has a diameter of 5.9 cm at the rim, and is decorated by motifs of three-prong vajras and other patterns.
