Rim Chaen was a painter and archaeological historian of fine arts. A native of Ogya (present day Iksan, North Jeolla), he went to Japan in 1927 to study at the Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1933, when Gwaneumsa Temple’s Great Hero Hall in Kaesong was being renovated, Rim worked as a color painter restoring murals. Subsequently, he assisted in restoring the Ultimate Bliss Hall at Songbulsa Temple in North Hwanghae, along with several other halls at various temples around Korea.
Rim once worked as an expert restorer of cultural properties at the National Museum of Korea. He also participated in the restoration projects of the Great Hero Hall in Bulguksa Temple in North Gyeongsang, as well as the Paldalmum Gate in Gyeonggi, the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, and the Chokseongnu Pavilion in Gyeongsang, all of which are recognized as National Treasures.
