Yang Fei

CHINA, Henan, Kaifeng; Northern Song dynasty

Yang Fei was a painter who was known to be audacious in character and skilled in creating large-scale paintings. He was proficient in the painting style of Wu Daozi, and was famous for his paintings of the images of Buddha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
According to Evaluation of Famous Painters of the Song Dynasty, the lively mural painting of deities in Puguangwang Temple in Anhui province was done by Yang. In addition, his scroll paintings of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Zhong Kui are listed in Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings. The Evaluation of Painters also records several of his works.
