Todaiji Temple Shosoin: Sutra Wrapper

This rectangular wrapper was used to store the Golden Light Sutra and is made from linen, silk, and silk brocade stitched together on a frame of bamboo strips. One wrapper could hold approximately ten sutra scrolls tied in a bundle. It is now in the collection of Shosoin of Todaiji Temple.
The main design consists of two large circular patterns in yellow on a dark red background with a predominantly yellow border. The two central figures are those of birds with a human head, which are framed by leaves. Surrounding the two central motifs, there are inscriptions referring to the protective capabilities of the Golden Light Sutra in safeguarding the nation. The inscription is encircled by flower and leaf patterns. Strips of yellow brocade silk with dark images comprise the outside border. These strips continue at the top, forming a triangle and extending beyond.
