
Tong Renyi, also known as Youxian, was a painter from Shu (present day Sichuan). A self-taught painter, he was proficient in drawing figures and his works were renowned for the forceful brushstrokes and remarkable style they exhibited. According to Overview of Painting, his works include murals of Emperor Xiaoming (reigned 516–528) of the Northern Wei dynasty, Matanga, and Dharmaratna, in the Daci Temple in Chengdu. Additionally, he created a painting of the Twenty-Five Kinds of Perfect Understanding from the Surangama Sutra at Baofu Yuan Temple.
