Zhang Mo was a painter, who along with his mentor, Wei Xie, is regarded as one of the Sages of Painting. His scroll painting of Vimalakirti was considered a masterpiece by Xie He, an acclaimed artist of the Southern Qi dynasty (479–502). In his book, Classification of Ancient Painters, Xie highly praised the work, commenting that Zhang had “an artistic demeanor that is wonderful and spiritual.” The scroll became the official painting of Vimalakirti used by the court during the Sui dynasty (581–618), as noted in Painting Annals of the Zhenguan Period. This scroll, along with his other painting, Pounding Silk, was also mentioned in Famous Paintings in History.
