Chu’an

CHINA, Sichuan, Deyang; Tang dynasty

Born in Shifang, Deyang, Chu’an, whose original family name was Ju, was a monk and painter who specialized in depicting figures and buildings. Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou noted that he created two mural paintings at Daci Temple in Sichuan, Ming Emperor Visiting the Huaqing Palace to Avoid Hot Summer and King Wu Banqueting State Officials at the Gusu Platform. Chu’an later reproduced these images in the form of circular fans, evincing his refined skills in painting and retaining the exquisite beauty of the original murals.
