Yungang Grotto 6: Attendant Bodhisattvas

Located on either side of each niche on the upper tier of the central pillar, the attendant Bodhisattvas measure approximately 1.9 m to 2.1 m in height and stand barefoot on lotus pedestals. Each figure wears a unique headdress and stands in a variety of postures. All of the Bodhisattvas have delicate features with slim eyes and gentle expressions. They wear long, delicately draped garments and stoles across their shoulders. The nimbuses behind the figures’ heads are round or pointed at the top, and some are decorated with lotus petal or honeysuckle patterns. Some hold the sides of the garment or stole, while others hold up an object or have palms joined at the chest. The carving style is bold and precise, with smooth, flowing lines, and careful detailing
