Yungang Grotto 5: Cross-Ankled Bodhisattva Niche

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Located on the lower right section of the front (south) wall, this trapezoidal niche is decorated with drapery-like decorations and carvings of flowers on the lintel. Within the niche, Maitreya Bodhisattva is seated with legs crossed at the ankles and flanked by Bodhisattvas in contemplation. Maitreya wears a headdress, a draped red garment tied with a short belt, and loose pants. The face is rounded and has a joyful expression. Both hands form a mudra in front of the chest.
The flanking Bodhisattvas sit on stools facing Maitreya. Each assumes the relaxation posture, with one hand supporting the head while the other rests on the thigh. The Bodhisattvas wear headdresses, garments similar in style to that of Maitreya, and bracelets. All three figures have round, unornamented nimbuses behind their heads.
