Dratang Monastery Central Hall Inner Shrine: Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Tibet, Lhoka

These images of Bodhisattvas paying respect to the Buddha are located on the lower right section of the mural, illustrating the Buddha teaching the Dharma on the west wall of the inner shrine of Dratang Monastery. The Bodhisattvas stand beside the stem of a lotus throne that is flanked by two lions. They wear crowns, ornate robes, and earrings. The Bodhisattva to the left of the small stupa in the center of the lower register is surrounded by curling vines, while the Bodhisattva to the right of the stupa sits within a decorative arch. These details suggest that the two figures are highly regarded.
