Anyue Huayan Cave 1: Sound Discernment Bodhisattva

CHINA, Sichuan, Ziyang; Northern Song dynasty

Sound Discernment Bodhisattva, one of the Twelve Perfect Enlightenment Bodhisattvas listed in the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment, is carved on the right wall of the cave. The Bodhisattva sits in lotus position, wearing an intricately carved headdress partially covered by a hood. At the top of the headdress is a small Buddha sitting on an auspicious cloud. The Bodhisattva has a smooth, round face with delicate features; the eyes are nearly closed and the expression is calm. The figure wears a loose, hooded outer robe over an inner robe and chest ornaments. The hands rest in the lap, covered by the draped sleeves of the robe.
