Verse by Master Huineng on a Good Heart

CHINA

Written by Master Yinguang, this verse was inscribed onto the Stele Wall of Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Stele Wall is located behind the Great Hero Hall and was erected to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the monastery. It contains inscriptions of verses and compositions by eminent monks, lay disciples, poets, and calligraphers. The verses include teachings of compassion, famous Buddhist adages, as well as illustrations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The collection contains 120 pieces. The verse in this example describes how a person’s thoughts and actions determine that individual’s outcome in life. It encourages people to cultivate their minds positively. A benevolent attitude guards against misfortunes even in times of difficulties.
The calligraphy of this verse has an authentic quality that resembles the rudimentary style of Northern Wei steles; it is also reminiscent of Tang calligrapher Yan Zhenqing’s regular script. The diligence and prudence of the calligrapher can be observed in the skillfully executed brushstrokes.
Yinguang was an eminent monk and the Thirteenth Patriarch of the Pure Land school. He dedicated his entire life to the propagation of Pure Land Buddhism by studying the sutras and chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha. He cautiously avoided fame and upheld three principles—refraining from abbotship, not accepting disciples, and not giving public teachings. His simple lifestyle, free from material desires and gains, is an exceptional example of an admirable and consistent, honest practice.
