Dafo Temple is located in Shimen town of Jiangjin district in Chongqing. The statue, despite being Avalokitesvara, is referred to as the Shimen Great Buddha or Jiangjin Great Buddha by the local people. An inscription found within the temple dates the statue to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
The figure is seated in the posture of ease, with the left hand resting on the bent knee and the right foot overhanging the throne. A Buddha is seated at the front of the ornately worked crown. Elaborate jewelry adorning the chest and locks of hair are scattered over the shoulders. The folds on the Bodhisattva’s robe are meticulously detailed with stoles covering the body.
