Peshawar: Standing Buddha

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar

Although damaged, this is a fine example of classical Gandharan artwork. A plain circular nimbus surrounds the Buddha’s head where the curled hair forms into a flattened topknot. An urna is located between the eyebrows, beneath which are almond-shaped eyes, a high bridged nose, and a mustache. The monastic robe covers both shoulders. The broken right hand is thought to have been raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. The lowered left hand holds the hem of the robe in place, while its clinging material reveals the muscular shaped body and demonstrates that the left leg is slightly advanced.
