Norbugang Monastery: Aksobhya Buddha

Silver alloy

Norbugang Monastery: Aksobhya Buddha

BHUTAN, Punakha

Aksobhya Buddha wears a five-leaf crown studded with turquoises, like his other pieces of jewelry. The openwork nimbus and aureole intersecting behind the figure are decorated with a flame-patterned rim. The gilding contrasts strongly with the silver alloy.
The figure sits in full lotus position with the right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The vajra held in the left hand identifies him as Aksobhya. The lotus throne is decorated in Bhutan style with lobed petals. It rests on an engraved platform with panels depicting a warrior holding a sword and shield in the center, and two elephants on each side.
