Liu Guandao, also known as Zhong Xian, was a court painter during the rule of Kublai Khan (reigned 1260–1294) from Dingzhou, Baoding. His figure paintings were based on the styles of the Jin (265–420) and Tang (618–907) dynasties, while his landscape paintings were modeled after the style of Guo Xi’s work. His paintings appear realistic, as if the viewer is at the actual scene being depicted. His works Arhats and Tathagata’s Gathering are now kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
