Fahai Temple Great Hero Hall: Skanda

Fahai Temple Great Hero Hall: Skanda

CHINA, Beijing; Ming dynasty

This image of Skanda is located on the far right of the mural portraying Brahma, Sakra, and Heavenly Beings on the north wall of the Great Hero Hall. Skanda wears a helmet and armor with decorative animal heads on the shoulders and belly. He has a noble bearing and a rounded chin. This image is similar to other depictions of Skanda in Buddhist temples from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, but is more refined and vivid.
