This 17th century mural is painted along the veranda of the Prosperous Nation Hall. Sakyamuni Buddha is shown seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The arch above the throne is decorated with seven stupas and seven small Buddhas. Just above the Buddha’s head, there is a fierce, three-eyed garuda that holds a naga girl and a makara in each claw. The Buddha has curled hair and a bejeweled usnisa. The two ribbons by his ears hang down along his shoulders. He wears a monastic robe draped over the left shoulder, and forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra with his right hand. The Buddha is flanked by two disciples with green nimbuses, both dressed in monastic robes. Each disciple holds a monk’s staff and an alms bowl. The murals at the Drotsang Monastery are a blend of Chinese and Tibetan styles. This mural is painted in distinct Tibetan style, with intricate geometric details and rich colors.
