CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

Located on the ceiling of the main chamber, this mural is divided into eight banners by red radial lines. White and blue flowers are painted around the center, and four pairs of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas facing one another are painted in the circle’s segments. The Buddhas are clad mostly in red monastic robes, with six-colored aureoles behind them. Each Bodhisattva wears a jeweled crown and a flowing stole draped over the upper body. The Bodhisattvas also hold vases in a various positions. Each Buddha and Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal held aloft by two figures.
