Kizil Cave 114: Jataka of Two Brothers Saving the Country

Kizil Cave 114: Jataka of Two Brothers Saving the Country

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

This mural is on the right side of the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the main chamber. The story is from the Sutra on the Collection of the Six Perfections. In the story, a naga harasses the citizens of a country. Therefore, two brothers transform themselves into an elephant and a lion in order to battle the naga and save the people.
The image depicts the scene in which the two brothers battle a two-headed naga. Within the naga’s coiled body and in its mouths are people with expressions of shock and terror. At the bottom of the painting stands an elephant, on top of which, a lion bares its teeth and brandishes its claws in preparation for battle with the naga.
