Kizil Cave 14: Valahassa Jataka

Kizil Cave 14: Valahassa Jataka

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

Located on the right side of the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the main chamber, this painting is based on the Sutra on the Collection of the Six Perfections. In the Jataka, the Horse King saw some merchants being attacked by a raksasa and wanted to save them. Within the painting, the galloping white Horse King is depicted above green seawater with a swirling pattern. The king carries two merchants on its back. Both of them wear long garments with collars and belts. The style of the outfits is the same, but they differ in color. Rounded blue mountains decorated with floral patterns, each composed of small white dots, can be found in the background of the illustration.
