Kizil Cave 8: Donors

Kizil Cave 8: Donors

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

Located along the walls on both sides of the left and right corridors, there are a total of 16 sword-wielding donors, four on each wall. This was the largest assembly of donor images within the Kizil Caves; however, all of the figures were cut from the walls and brought to Berlin by German explorers.
The four pictured donors are dressed in flamboyant, patterned, knee-length robes with down-turned collars, and wear belts with sheaths attached. Because the costumes bear characteristics of noble attire, it is possible that the patrons of the cave were members of the Kuchean royal family.
