Kizil Cave 77: Vajradhara and Apsaras

Kizil Cave 77: Vajradhara and Apsaras

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

This mural was originally on the outer wall of the rear corridor, above a statue of a reclining Sakyamuni Buddha. The figure on the left is Vajradhara, who wears a jeweled crown, ornaments, and a belt around the waist. He holds a vajra in the left hand near his waist, and flowers in the right. The second figure is an apsara who plays a long-necked moon-shaped lute, and the third is a dancing apsara. The apsaras follow Vajradhara, who flies toward Sakyamuni Buddha to pay his respects.
