South Xiangtangshan Grotto 7: Niche Sculptures

CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty

These sculptures are enshrined within a canopy-style niche. The main Buddha is depicted sitting on a Sumeru throne while resting his feet on lotus pedestals emerging from the Earth Deity’s mouth. This Buddha’s head is missing, but the nimbus is still visible and decorated with patterns of lotus petals and honeysuckle. The Buddha wears an inner robe underneath a monastic robe that has long, loose sleeves covering both shoulders.
The statues of disciples and Bodhisattvas on either side of the Buddha have nimbuses decorated with a honeysuckle pattern. Most of the statues are missing their heads. The only complete statue is left of the Buddha, standing with joined palms and a solemn, respectful expression.
