These statues are located on the west side of the central pillar. A Buddha with two disciples and two Bodhisattvas can be found within the niche. The original head of the main statue was replaced by later generations. The Buddha’s monastic robe covers both shoulders, and the hanging folds form a series of arcs across the chest. The figure sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne with the left hand forming the varada (wish-granting) mudra while the right hand forms the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. A nimbus and a mandorla behind the Buddha are surrounded by a flame pattern. The statue’s appearance is very similar to the Buddha found on the central pillar in Grotto 9.
The disciples on both sides of the Buddha have lost their heads but the rest of the body is still intact. The heads of the two Bodhisattvas have been repaired by later generations. The Bodhisattvas have strong physiques and wear long skirts, stoles, necklaces, and jewelry. On each side of the lotus throne, small holes lead to the rear of the central pillar.
