North Xiangtangshan Grotto 3: Warrior

CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty

The warrior statue in Grotto 3 is located on the right side of the entrance. The warrior has a fierce facial expression with an alert gaze and heavy eyebrows pulled together above the nose. The figure has a tall, sturdy, well-built physique. The warrior is dressed in robes that wrap the body snugly and a stole that crosses the body is tied at the waist. The simple draped lines of the robe characterize the artwork as being from a transitional stage between the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534) and the Sui (581–618) and Tang (618–907) dynasties.
