North Xiangtangshan Grotto 9: Niches - Stupa Spire

North Xiangtangshan Grotto 9: Niches

CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty

These niches can be found on the north and south walls of Grotto 9 of the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes. There are seven rectangular niches arranged in a row. The niches have square frames and arched lintels adorned with drapery. Supporting the lotus bases of the columns on either side of the niches are ferocious mythical creatures grinning and stretching their wings. The capitals of the columns display engraved patterns of honeysuckle, and atop the columns and niches are lotuses and jewels engulfed in flames. Miniature stupa spire rest on the top of the niches. They consist of stacked rings, an upright lotus, and three flaming jewels.
